How to keep an account you opened with a temporary number

2026-11-04 · 2 min read

Opening an account with a temporary number is the easy part. Keeping it is about what you do in the first five minutes, while you are still logged in.

1. Add an email you control

Almost every app lets you add an email for recovery. Do it first and confirm it, so password resets have somewhere to go.

2. Switch two-factor login to an authenticator app

SMS-based two-factor would send each login code to a number you no longer have. An authenticator app such as Google Authenticator or 2FAS keeps working on your phone instead.

3. Set a password if the app uses SMS logins

TikTok, Tinder and similar apps log you in by SMS by default. Creating a password in the settings gives you a way in without a new code.

4. Save backup codes

Apps that offer two-factor usually give you one-time backup codes. Store them in a password manager; they are your way back if you lose the authenticator.

5. Stay logged in on one device

An active session is the cheapest insurance. As long as one device stays signed in, you can change settings without any code.

If you skip these steps

The account works until the app asks for a new code, often on a new device or after a security check. At that point the number may belong to someone else, and recovery gets hard. Five minutes now saves that.

Questions

Can I swap the number for my own later?
Usually yes, in the account's security settings. You may need the current login or an email confirmation, which is why step 1 matters.
Do I need all five steps?
For a throwaway account, no. For anything you want to keep, at least the email and the authenticator app.
