What happens to a temporary number after you use it

A temporary number feels abstract: it appears, a code lands on it, and it is gone. Here is what actually happens along the way, and why it matters for the account you open.
Where the number comes from
The number is a real line from a mobile operator, made available by an activation provider for a short time. It is not generated or made up; that is why apps deliver real SMS to it.
How long it is yours
From the moment you order until the code arrives or the waiting time runs out. During that window the number is reserved for your order only, and the SMS sent to it shows up on your screen.
Who sees the message
The code is shown to you in your account. It is not published on a public page, which is the main difference from free SMS websites where anyone can read every message.
After the order closes
The number goes back to the provider. Over time it can be handed to someone else for a different app. That is why you should never leave the number as the only way into an account: secure it with your own email and an authenticator app.
What this means for you
- Treat the number as a one-time key, not as your contact number.
- Remove it from your public profile where the app allows.
- Do not expect it to receive password resets later.
